EuNC COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 
As EuNC is developing its new curriculum, various new courses are being developed and old courses evaluated and adjusted to the new curriculum. Some of the following course descriptions are in their final stage; others are nothing more than working descriptions that are subject to change. 
 
These descriptions relate to all courses offered at the Büsingen campus and the Learning Centres. The third and fourth level courses are offered at the Büsingen Campus only.
 
 
Cluster 1: Bible
 
BIB11 Introduction to Old Testament
This course is an introduction to the literature of the Old Testament. It examines the themes, history and literary character of the Old Testament’s books and reflects upon the relevance of their messages for contemporary society. 
 
This is a first level course required for all EuNC programmes and serves as prerequisite for Hermeneutics.
 
BIB12 Introduction to New Testament
This course is an introduction to the literature of the New Testament. It examines the themes, historical, social and cultural background, and literary character of the New Testament's books and reflects upon the relevance of their witness to Jesus Christ for contemporary society.
 
This is a first level course required for all EuNC programmes and serves as prerequisite for Hermeneutics.
 
BIB13 Hermeneutics
This course is an introduction to the principles and practice of biblical interpretation, and designed for developing skills in communicating the Word of God. It will focus on: learning the appropriate tools and process of interpreting and applying Scripture; understanding the principles of interpretation that are specific to the various types of literature in the Bible; and engaging in various issues and hermeneutical problems that affect how Scripture is interpreted in the church.
 
This is a first level course and has Introduction to Old and New Testament as prerequisites and is a prerequisite for all other Bible courses and preaching.
 
BIB21 Pentateuch
This course is a survey of Genesis through Deuteronomy with emphasis on methods of studying these books. This course will also introduce the students to key theological themes and religious concepts found in these books. 
 
This is a second level course and has Introduction to Old Testament and Hermeneutics as pre-requisites.
 
BIB22 Synoptic Gospels
This course is a study of the first three Gospels, with attention to their context, literary structure, and theological message. The course will feature exegetical study of these Gospels based on the English text. This course extends students’ foundational learning from introductory biblical subjects and provides opportunities to develop exegetical and expositional skills that are necessary for effective Bible study, preaching, and ministry. These books are studied in the framework of their significance for the community of faith.
 
This is a second level course and has Introduction to New Testament and Hermeneutics as pre-requisites.
 
BIB23 Pauline Literature
This course is an inductive study of Paul’s thought as communicated through the prison letters of Philippians, Ephesians and Colossians. The course will concentrate on an exegetical study of these three letters based on the English text. This course extends students’ foundational learning from introductory biblical subjects and provides opportunities to develop exegetical and expositional skills that are necessary for effective Bible study, preaching, and ministry. 
 
This is a second level course and has Introduction to New Testament and Hermeneutics as pre-requisites.
 
BIB24 Old Testament Prophets
This course is a study of the message and background of the Old Testament prophets. The purpose is to acquaint the student with the major principles of the interpretation of OT prophecy, the context of the prophets, and the contemporary significance of their message. Special emphasis will be given to some of the major or minor prophets.
 
This is a second level course and has Introduction to Old Testament and Hermeneutics as prerequisites.
 
BIB31 Beginning NT Greek
This course is an introduction to the grammar, vocabulary and syntax of the New Testament Greek.
 
This is an upper level course and is divided into three parts. In order to continue the previous parts needs to be completed with a minimum grade of C.
 
BIB32 Intermediate NT Greek
This course is designed to further the student's understanding of Greek grammar and syntax and to develop skills in Greek translation and exegesis.
This an upper level course and is divided into two parts. The first part is required for the BA, the second part is an elective. Prerequisite is completion of Beginning NT Greek with a minimum grade of C-.
BIB41 NT Greek Texts
This course is designed to further the student's understanding of Greek grammar and syntax and to develop more advanced skills in Greek translation through study of NT writing. Special attention will be given to developing the student’s skills in exegeting the Greek text. 
 
Prerequisite for this course is completion of Intermediate NT Greek with a minimum grade of C-.
 
BIB42 Psalms and Wisdom Literature
This course is a study of Job through Song of Solomon, with emphasis upon the literary and devotional characteristics of this Old Testament genre.
This is an upper level course and requires that all lower Bible requirements are completed (intro OT and NT, Hermeneutics, lower division OT and NT course).
 
BIB43 Pauline Epistles
This course is astudy of Paul’s thought as communicated through his writings, with a concentration on 1 Corinthians and Romans.  The course will include an introduction to Paul the man, the missionary, the theologian, and the letter-writer, followed by a more in depth inductive study of sections of 1 Corinthians and Romans, which will comprise the majority of the class. Paul’s writings are studied in the framework of their significance for the community of faith.
 
This is an upper level course and requires that all lower Bible requirements are completed (intro OT and NT, Hermeneutics, lower division OT and NT course), as well as Beginning NT Greek and the first part of Intermediate NT Greek.
 
BIB44 Johannine Literature
This course is aninductive study of the Gospel, the letters of John, and the book of Revelation. Matters covered include the historical/cultural setting, literary structure, and theological message of these writings, giving special attention to the distinctive features of the Johannine writings. A major part of the course will focus on exegeting and applying selected passages of the Gospel of John and 1 John. The final part of the course will be an overview of the message and interpretation of Revelation. This class will try to provide students with the opportunity to learn various aspects of the processes of exegesis and exposition through interaction with the text.

This is an upper level course and requires that all lower Bible requirements are completed (intro OT and NT, Hermeneutics, lower division OT and NT course).
 
BIB45 Old Testament Narrative Literature
This course is a study of the Old Testament narrative literature in the books of Samuel and Kings.
 
This is an upper level course and requires that all lower Bible requirements are completed (intro OT and NT, Hermeneutics, lower division OT and NT course), as well as Beginning NT Greek and the first part of Intermediate NT Greek.
 
Cluster 2: Theology, Tradition and Identity
 
THE11 Introduction to Theology
This course explores the need for theological reflection in the Christian community and personal life, and introduces the students to the discipline of theological reflection, the basic terminology and the organization of theology as an academic discipline.
 
This course is a first level course, and serves as prerequisite for all theological courses. Ideally it needs to be among the first courses a student enrols in.
 
THE13 Holiness & Identity
This course explores the spiritual development of the whole person within various interdisciplinary contexts. The particular emphasis will be upon the call to holy living, and the corporate identity of the Church of the Nazarene as a holiness church. 
 
This is a first level course without any specific prerequisites.
 
THE21 Christian Doctrines
This course is an exploration of the major doctrines of the Christian church, from the viewpoint of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, giving attention to the concept of revelation, the doctrine of God, the Trinity, God the Saviour, God the Spirit, the Church, and the last things.
 
This is a second level course. Prerequisite for this course is Introduction to Theology.
This course will be offered at most locations in two separate courses, Christian Doctrines 1 and Christian Doctrines 2. 
 
THE22 Nazarene History & Polity
This course introduces the student to the historical heritage and organizational structure of the Church of the Nazarene. Attention is given to historical, theological, and personal factors, which gave, rise to the denomination, and to the functions of the church at the local and district levels.
 
This is a second level course and has Holiness and Identity and Church History as its prerequisites.
 
THE23 Church History
This course is an introduction to the history of the Church and its theology from the early period to the present time, as expressed in Western and Eastern Christianity.
 
This is a second level course that builds on the foundation laid in European History, if offered at the location. Depending on the location, certain periods in the history of the church will be emphasized more than others, and the course can be offered in two separate courses. If offered in two separate courses, Church History 1 will deal with the Early Church and the Medieval Church, and Church History 2 will study the modern church history from the Reformation to the present.
 
 
 
THE31 John Wesley’s Theology
This course is a historical study of John Wesley; his spiritual journey and the development of his theological thinking. 
This is an upper level theology course, and has Church History and Christian Doctrines as its prerequisites.
 
THE32 Christian Apologetics
This course explores the theological discipline of Apologetics and explores the various apologetic issues that challenge contemporary Christianity.
 
This is an upper level theology course, and has Philosophy, Church History and Christian Doctrines as its prerequisites.
 
THE33 Christianity and Other Religions
This course seeks to theologically reflect upon the other religions from a Christian perspective.
 
This is an upper level theology course, and has Philosophy, Church History, Christian Doctrines and World Religions as its prerequisites.
 
THE41 Christian Faith and Science
This course explores the relationship between the Christian faith and the sciences. 
 
This is an upper level theology course, and has Philosophy, Church History, and Christian Doctrines as its prerequisites.
 
THE42 Contemporary Holiness Theology
This course studies various examples of contemporary holiness theological designs from a Wesleyan perspective.
 
This is an upper level theology course, and has Philosophy, Church History, Christian Doctrines and Wesley’s Theology as its prerequisites.
 
 
Cluster 3: God’s Mission; The Church and Vocation
 
MIS10 Mentoring
This is a co-curricular activity designed to assist students in their studies. It supports the students through academic advising, corporate worship, spiritual direction and small group discussion of relevant issues connected to their studies.
 
Students are divided according to their level of studies; MIS10 relates to first level students, MIS20 to second level students; MIS30 to third level students, and MIS40 to fourth level students.
 
MIS11 God’s Mission & the Church
This course is an introductory course exposing students to a missional view on theology and ministry. Through a biblical-theological exploration of the mission of God (Missio Dei) students will explore the essential nature of the church as the body of Christ in the world, called into existence to cooperate with God in fulfilling his mission on earth.
 
This is a first level course and should be one of the first courses students enrol in.
 
MIS12 Vocation & Personal Ministry
This course helps students explore the concept of human vocation, applied to both lay and ordained ministry within and outside the structures of the church, as the cooperation with God in fulfilling His mission. Students will start developing some kind of personal ministry plan based on an evaluation of their strengths and life journey that will serve as a guide in their academic studies.
 
This is a first level course and has God’s Mission and the Church as its prerequisite, and needs to be among the first courses students enrol in at the beginning of their studies.
 
MIS13 Spiritual Formation
This course seeks to establish spiritual disciplines in the lives of students preparing for ministry to a broken world in need of holy transformation. It will focus on the spiritual disciplines necessary for personal ministry within the framework of God’s mission (Missio Dei). Time is given to the classical spiritual disciplines, and opportunities are given throughout the course for application of learning in both personal and corporate spiritual formation. 
 
This is a first level course and has God’s Mission and the Church and Vocation & Personal Ministry as its preferred prerequisites.
 
MIS41 Person of the Minister
This course explores the various challenges the minister will face in his or her ministry, and explores ways to remain well in ministry.
 
This is a level four course and should be taken in the final year of studies at EuNC.
 
Cluster 4: Proclaiming the Kingdom of God
 
PRC21 Reinventing Evangelism and Church
This course explores how people can be reached with the Gospel who live in the post-modern/communist and post-Christian context of Europe, and how missional churches can be planted in these contexts. Various outreach and church planting strategies will be studied and evaluated from a biblical missiological perspective with the unique European context in mind, and with the purpose to develop a passion in the students to reach their generation through new church plants.
 
This is a second level course open to students of all levels, and has God’s Mission and the Church as its prerequisite.
 
PRC22 Intercultural Missions
This course is designed to help students focus on the importance of connecting theology and missiology. The course will include an examination of the biblical and theological presuppositions on the practice of mission. Preliminary attention will be given to the nature of theology and the field of missiology. The vital role of a biblical theology of mission will be explored.
 
This is a second level course and has God’s Mission & the Church, Reinventing Evangelism & Church as its prerequisites.
 
PRC23 Urban Ministry/Compassionate Ministries
This course helps students explore ways to lead the church in ministering to the needs of people in urban settings.
 
This is a second level course and has God’s Mission & the Church and Reinventing Evangelism and Church as its prerequisite.
 
 
Cluster 5: Shepherding the Flock
 
PAS11 Faith Development in the Local Congregation
This class is a study of Christian Education in the context of the total ministry of the local church focussing on the goal of development of the faith in the believers (discipleship). Theological foundations and educational principles and practices will be studied and applied throughout the course.
 
This is a first level course with God’s Mission and the Church as prerequisites and preferably Spiritual Formation.
 
PAS21 Christian Worship
This course focuses on the weekly worship service of the congregation. The basis is a biblical and historical survey of worship and liturgy. The course also develops a theology of worship, and there is reflection on the spiritual preparation of the pastor and on different elements of the worship service. Finally, the course explores models of worship, which are relevant in contemporary society.
 
This is a second level course, open to students of all levels. The prerequisite for this course is God’s Mission and the Church.
 
PAS22 Church Development
This course examines how the local congregation can organize itself to grow as a missional church and develop the appropriate ministries to reach the people outside and to shepherd its own people.
 
This is a second level course and has God’s Mission and the Church and Reinventing Evangelism and Church as its prerequisites. It is preferred that students taking this course have had other courses relating to the ministry of the local church.
 
 
Cluster 6: Ministry Specialties
 
MIN10 Leadership Conference
This course requires of students to participate in the annual leadership conference at the Büsingen campus.
 
This course provides a possibility to all students of all levels to participate in the Leadership Conference in the fourth week of January without any prerequisites.
 
MIN11 Practics
The Practics courses enable the students to implement what they have learned, test theories, to develop practical skills for ministry, to explore their strengths and weaknesses and to get enthusiastic about ministry.
 
Each location will develop these Practics courses for each level, and in such a way that they suit their students and relate to the ministry opportunities.
 
MIN22 Preaching
This course introduces the students to the fundamentals of sermon construction and delivery, focusing especially on expository sermons.
 
This is a second level course. Prerequisites for this course are Introduction to the Old and the New Testament, Hermeneutics and Worship.
 
MIN23 Foundations for Youth & Family Ministry
This course will explore various models of children and youth work in the local church.
 
This is a second level course and has God’s Mission and the Church, Human Growth and Development as its prerequisites, and preferably Faith Development in the Local Church.
 
MIN24 Pastoral Care & Counselling
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of pastoral care and counselling. The focus is on the integration of learning and application of counselling principles within the parish setting. The student will be exposed to the various theoretical approaches in counselling as applied to human concerns in both individual and group counselling. The student will be encouraged to develop their own position on the most useful approaches to counselling as well as common ethical issues related to counselling, i.e. privacy, specific cultural traditions, personal boundaries of both client and pastor, etc.
 
This is a second level course open for students of all levels, and has God’s Mission and the Church and Human Growth and Development as prerequisites.
 
MIN25 Church Leadership
This course introduces the student to the theory of leadership and administration in the local congregation. The course challenges each student to become a Christ-like leader/pastor in a local church setting and to give leadership according to his or her gifts.
 
This is a second level course open to students of all levels. Prerequisites for the course are God’s Mission and the Church, Vocation and Personal Ministry and Interpersonal/-cultural Communication.
 
MIN26 Internship 1
The internship exposes students to the practices of ministry. Under the supervision of a minister/staff member the student develops basic skills for ministry and will gain understanding of his/her own vocation and the responsibilities it entails.
 
The internship happens during the second level of the studies of the student.
 
MIN27 Ministry Integration
This course is intended to integrate the various ministry related courses into a model for local church ministry, and also evaluates the student’s aptitude for ministry.
 
This is a second level course and students should take this towards the end of their second level.
 
MIN42 Advanced Preaching
This course is a continuation of Preaching.
 
This is an upper-level course and has Preaching as its prerequisite.
 
MIN43 Advanced Youth & Family Ministry
This course is a continuation of Foundation for Youth and Family Ministry.
 
This is an upper-level course and has Foundations for Youth and Family Ministry as its prerequisite.
 
MIN44 Advanced Pastoral Care & Counselling
This course is a continuation of Pastoral Care and Counselling.
 
This is an upper-level course and has Pastoral Care and Counselling as its prerequisite.
 
MIN45 Internship II
This is the second internshipof the students, in which they will develop basic skills for ministry under the supervision of a minister/staff member.
 
Student will do this internship during their fourth level of studies.
 
MIN46 Advanced Leadership
This course is a continuation of Leadership.
 
This is an upper-level course and has Leadership as its prerequisite.
 
 
Cluster 6: Music
 
MUS10 Choir
College Choir is a non-audition performing group composed of students, faculty, and
community members. A variety of music will be sung with the goal of blending the
various voices in harmony. Our presentations are designed to be a testimony of the
Christian faith. The selection of music will be mostly sacred and seasonal. The college choir participates in several concerts and/or church services each year.
This course is open to students of all levels.
MUS11 Hand Bell Choir
Hand Bell Choir is a performing musical group that enables beginners and those with
experience to work together as a team to produce music. Course work will include reading music, key signatures, and sight-reading of the treble and bass clefs. The selection of music will be mostly sacred and seasonal. The hand bell choir participates in several concerts and/or church services each year.
 
This course is open to students of all levels.
 
MUS12 Ensemble
A small choral group of selected voices which prepares music including gospel arrangements, anthems, and other types of sacred classics for use in concerts and church services.
This course is open to students of all levels.
MUS13 Private Voice
In private voice lessons emphasis is given to fundamental principles of vocal production, breath control, posture, diction and interpretation. Folk, pop, musicals, sacred and classic songs as well as hymns and contemporary praise and worship songs will be used. The level of instruction will be determined by the student's background. 
This course is open to students of all levels.
MUS14 Beginning Piano
Fundamental instruction is provided in a basic understanding of the keyboard, the development of piano technique, grand staff reading and scale construction. Individual playing and reading ability will be considered when instructional materials are chosen.
 
This course is open to students of all levels.
 
MUS15 Beginning Guitar
This course provides fundamental instruction for the beginning guitar player.
 
This course is open to students of all levels.

MUS24 Intermediate Piano
Instruction is provided for the intermediate pianist. The piano literature chosen will be based on the individual reading level of each student. Emphasis is given to technical ability, advanced chord study/analysis and harmonization techniques.

Prerequisite for this course is successful completion of Beginning Piano with a minimum grade of C-.

MUS44 Advanced Piano
Instruction is provided for the advanced pianist. The piano literature chosen will 
be based on the individual reading level of each student. Emphasis is given to technical ability, advanced chord study/analysis and harmonisation techniques.
Prerequisite for this course is successful completion of Intermediate Piano with a minimum grade of C-.
 
Cluster 7: Understanding the World
 
GEN10 European History
This course is a general introduction to the history of the continent of Europe from Antiquity to the present. It will present the history of Europe in an integrated way, focussing on the various geographical regions of Europe (North, West, South and East including Russia), and illustrating how the various European countries share a common history.
 
This is a first level course, and serves as a historical background on which other courses such as Philosophy and Church History will build.
 
 
GEN20 Philosophy
This course introduces students to the most important schools of philosophy that have interacted with Christian theology as allies or enemies, and to the philosophical terminology and concepts used in those dialogues. In this review, primary attention will be given to the dominant influence of the modern philosophies in the previous centuries on the western culture and theology, and/or the rise of postmodernism during the last decades in order to come to a better understanding of the changing world in which we live.
 
This course is a second level course, and has Introduction to theology and preferably European History as it prerequisites. It serves as preparation for Church History and Christian Doctrines.
 
GEN21 Christian Ethics
This course is an introduction to the presuppositions of the major ethical systems. Several current ethical issues will be studied in the light of these presuppositions. Special emphasis will be given to the relationship between ethics and Christian theology in general, and Christian holiness in particular.
 
This course is a second level course, and has Philosophy and Christian Doctrines as its prerequisites.
 
GEN22 World Religions
The course examines several major world religions and ideologies, as they are present in European society. It studies their founders, sacred writing, beliefs and rituals and history in order to gain an understanding and appreciation of them. Also included is a comparison and contrast of each religion to Christianity.
 
This is a second level course, and has Introduction to Theology, Christian Doctrines and Philosophy as its prerequisites.
 
GEN31 Economics & Politics
This course is a basic introduction to economy and politics for BA students.
 
This course is an upper level course.
 
GEN32 History & Appreciation of Art
This course introduces the students to the history of art in a variety of ways and aims at increasing an appreciation of art among the students.
 
This course is an upper level course.
 
GEN33 Computing for the Liberal Arts
This course introduces the students to the fundamentals of computer-based information systems with emphasis on their use in a multi-disciplined environment. Specific applications will include word-processing, spreadsheeting, integrating software tools, and the Internet.
 
This course is a third level course and is required for the BA programme.
 
GEN42 Environmental Science
Science introduces basic chemical and physical principles to environmental
issues in order to understand the major environmental problems of our day and to see a connection between environmental problems and other social and ethical problems of our society. Students will also be challenged to develop a philosophy relating to Christian stewardship of the environment.
This course is a fourth level course and is required for the BA programme.
 
GEN43 Principles of Biology
A study of structure and function at the cell, organism, population, and community levels. Designed to meet the needs of the general education student.
 
This course of a fourth level course and is required for the BA programme.
 
GEN44 Concepts in Physical Science
In this course selected topics are taken from Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry and the Earth and Space Sciences, emphasizing the conceptual structure of science.
 
This course is a fourth level course and is required for the BA programme.
 
 
Cluster 8: Understanding People
 
SOC21 Interpersonal/Intercultural Communication
The course is an introduction to the principles of communication theory, and an application to the context of Christian ministry and mission.  Special attention will be given to working together with people and cultural diversity.
 
This is a second level course open to students of the first and second level. No specific courses are required as prerequisites.
 
SOC22 Human Growth & Development
This course is an introductory level Developmental Psychology Course. The goal of this course is to acquaint students with the development of human beings to include the child from birth through the life cycles to old age. The value of the developmental perspective as a useful way to view human behaviour will be stressed, viewing human development through the physical, cognitive, social, & personality contexts. The role of the family, peers, media, church & schools will also be emphasized.
 
This is a second level course open to students of the first and second level. It serves as pre-requisite for Pastoral and Counselling and Foundations for Youth and Family Ministry. 
 
SOC23 Marriage and Family
Marriage & Family is an introductory level course with the goal to provide students with knowledge about marriage and family relationships. The hope is that this knowledge will help them move toward increasing the number of happy couples and strong families in the parts of the world in which they find themselves. The concept that marriage and families are systems of relationships functioning both within themselves and with other systems in their environment is stressed. Offered as available.
 
 
Cluster 9: Academic Proficiencies
 
ACP10 Intro to College Studies
This course introduces the students to EuNC, assists them in finding their way in their studies, and encourages study skills that will help them get the most out of life-long academic pursuits. The course consists of a required component providing all necessary information for studying at EuNC, and various smaller units that students take according to their need as indicated by an assessment of their study skills.
 
This course is first level course. All new students have to take the required component first at the start of their studies at EuNC. The assessment of their study skills will determine which of the smaller units the students will take. In the learning centres students can enrol in these smaller units throughout their first level.
 
ACP20 Language and Written Expression
This course is intended to develop within students a college‑level writing skills and to stimulate them to think critically, express themselves clearly, and develop an appreciation for language through a variety of writing experiences. The purpose of the course is on the act of writing, to help students acquire and develop essential writing skills which will enable them to be successful students and, when they leave this community, successful communicators in their ministry.
 
This is a second level course and follows Introduction to College Studies. 
 
ACP30 Research and Methodology
This course assists students in doing research and writing research papers.
 
This is a third level course and has Language and Written Expression as its prerequisite.
 
ACP40 Senior Review
The Senior Review evaluates the academic competencies of students. Students will be tested on their general knowledge in the areas of Bible, Theology, and Church History.
 
This is a fourth level course, and all students in their final year of studies will take this course. 
ENG10 English
This course teaches English as a foreign language at the intermediate level in order to improve the student’s skills in understanding spoken English, reading, writing and speaking.
This course is divided into three parts: English 1 requires a paper-based TOEFL score between 450 and 500, English 2 between 500 and 525, and English 3 between 525 and 550. 

A minimum grade of C- is required to progress from one English course to the next.

GER10 German

This course teaches German as a foreign language at the beginner’s level.
No prerequisites are required and no knowledge of the German language. 

This course is divided into two parts, in order to progress to the second part a minimum grade of C- is required.
